What is the age for driving?

You need to be 18 to drive in Grenada. Unlike North America countries where the age is 16 to be legally able to drive, you need to reach the legal age of 18 to obtain a driver's license. While learning to drive, you will be issued a learner's permit. Once you have passed both the written exam, and the practical test, then you will be issued a driver's license.

If you are renting a vehicle, you will need to be older. Some rental companies prefer drivers to be at least 25 years old with two years or more driving experience.

Where do I get a driver's license?

You will need to contact or visit to the Traffic Department of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) located on the Carenage, St. George's.

Which side of the road to drive?

In Grenada, we drive on the left hand side of the road which originates from our British colonial past. This is different to other countries which drive on the right hand side of the road. The best vehicle for driving is one which the driver sits on the right hand side - a right hand vehicle. While persons import left hand drive vehicles, and do manage to drive them on the road, it can be a bit tricky when navigating intersections, roundabouts or turning off onto byroads.

Are the roads narrow or wide?

A lot of the main road network have somewhat wide roads that allow for easy overtaking. The road network along the eastern corridor of the island is wider compared to the western corridor. Due to the geographical terrain, the road network along the western corridor is more hilly and winding with some sharp corners. On the other hand, the majority of byroads are narrow roads that allow for two vehicles to pass each other, but not with much space in between.

How do I fill up?

There are gas stations located throughout the island, that offer both petrol and diesel to fill up your gas tanks. Gas stations usually close around 11pm, and are open Sunday to Sunday. The only 24 hour gas station is located in Tempe, St. George's - Deco Gas station.

With the increase in hybrid and electric vehicles on the island, there are a few electric charging stations available:

  1. Sea Breeze hotel in Grand Anse

  2. True Blue Bay Hotel in True Blue, Grand Anse

  3. La Heliconia in Point Salines.

What is the cost of petrol gas?

The cost of gas varies between $14 to $17.00 E.C per gallon. There is a cap on the price of gas such that it cannot currently exceed $17 per gallon. Basically, $20 can only give just over 1 gallon of gas, making the cost of transportation a bit high.

How attentive do you need to be when driving?

You need to be very attentive whilst driving because of unexpected obstructions including animals such as sheep or goats crossing the road, or a child running into the road. Also, as the roads can be narrow, vehicles may wander onto your side of the road, and you may need to suddenly slow down or stop or wing away to avoid an accident.
