The Grenada Revolution - what was OREL?

OREL formed part of the work under the NJM (New JEWEL movement). OREL stands for Organization for Revolutionary Education and Liberation (OREL). The group comprised of mostly secondary school students who were recruited from student based organizations.

The intention was to educate young minds on the socialist theories which supported the Grenada revolution. This includes Marxism theory, techniques and application to small economies like Grenada. It was a study group and Bernard Coard was one of the main minds who engaged with the young students teaching them about socialism. Bernard Coard had experience as a Professor, having worked as a UWI Professor at St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad.
