Dancing of the flag - Carriacou tradition

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

Dancing of the flag is an activity done in preparation for a traditional wedding in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

Appearance

The common colours of the flags are red and white.. Red means freedom and white means peace. Words are marked on the flags such as 'In God we trust" and 'Peace and Love".

Flag dancing

Each side has a flag dancer. The bride has a flag dancer and the groom has a flag dancer. During the flag dancing, the flag is twirled. The flagmen make sexual gestures to signal the honeymoon activities that will follow the wedding. The flag dancers ensure that the flag does not touch the ground as that is a bad sign. The groom's flag needs to always stay at the top, above the bride's flag, to signal his role as head of the family. At the end of the flag dancing, the flag are joined together as a sign of family unity because of the marriage.
