The Grenada Revolution - Rise of the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council

The People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) who were the masterminds of the Grenada revolution started the organization known today as the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council (GFNC). Under the People's Laws No. 32 of 1980, enacted by the PRG, the Grenada Nutrition Council was birthed. The People's laws replaced the constitution which was suspended as the body of laws that governed Grenada.

The Grenada Food and Nutrition Council (GFNC) was started in 1980 to focus on the health and nutrition of the Grenadian population. The GFNC was to develop nutritional planning, monitor food and nutrition programs and establish a national food and nutrition policy. Education was also part of their mandate with the objective of improving the knowledge and awareness of Grenadians about nutrition.

The GFNC falls under the Ministry of Agriculture. During 1979 to 1983, the Minister of Agriculture was George Louison. Louison served briefly as Minister of Education, but his longest portfolio stint was with Ministry of Agriculture.

In addition to the work of GFNC, the PRG expanded the milk feeding program, repair of school kitchens and the existing school feeding program to support food and nutrition development in Grenada.
